– a poem by Deborah Stevenson

Sparkling lights dance
upon the waters of time.
Lives flicker
   and dim
            in an instant,
then vanish without a trace.

I walk into
   the light at water’s edge,
embracing the golden glow
that warms the hollow

I note shadows that lurk,
   clinging like lichen–
   that hold on
              to hardness.

Meanwhile, soothing waters
   over jagged rocks,
              soften ridges,
                       break down

Waves touch the shore
   in rhythmic procession,
arriving without effort
    to the home
              they never left.
